A Hurricane Season Garage Door Checklist for Houston Homes

A garage door is the largest opening in your home. Here is what to check before a storm, what not to try, and how to look over the door afterward.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. The best time to check your garage door is before a storm is on the map.
  • The garage door is the largest opening in your home. If it fails, wind can get inside and damage the roof and walls.
  • Check the basics now: tracks and brackets, springs and cables, seals, and your door’s wind rating label.
  • Some popular tricks backfire. Don’t park a car against the door, open the door, or add weight on your own.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and storms can still form outside those dates. A garage door that is in good shape handles wind and rain better, and a few checks before the season can spare you a big repair bill.

Why the garage door matters

The garage door is the largest opening in most homes. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety found that weak tracks, flying debris, and poor attachment are the main ways garage doors fail in high wind. When a door gives way, wind pressure builds inside the house and pushes on the roof and walls.

Before the season

  • Tracks and brackets: make sure they are tight and anchored to the wall, with no bends or loose bolts. See track repair.
  • Springs and cables: look for rust, fraying, and a door that hangs crooked. Don’t touch them. Call us if anything looks worn. See spring repair and cable replacement.
  • Panels and hinges: look for dents, cracks, and loose hinges. A damaged panel is weaker in the wind. See panel replacement.
  • Seals: replace cracked weather seals so rain does not blow in. See weather seal replacement.
  • Safety features: test the auto-reverse and the sensors. A safety inspection covers all of it.

Check the wind rating

A wind-rated door has been tested against wind pressure, and its tracks, hinges, and brackets are part of that rating. Look for a label inside the door that lists positive and negative pressure ratings in pounds per square foot. IBHS notes that doors installed before 2006 were likely not wind-rated, and a missing or unreadable label suggests the door may not be.

If your door is old, damaged, or unlabeled, ask about replacing it with a wind-rated model. Compare steel doors and insulated doors, and ask your local building department what your area requires. Some retrofit bracing kits exist for older doors, but the Door and Access Systems Manufacturers Association says adding reinforcement should be left to a trained technician.

What not to do

  • Don’t park a car against the door. DASMA warns that backing a vehicle against a garage door may not prevent damage, and it can damage the vehicle.
  • Don’t open the door to “relieve pressure.” An open door lets damaging wind into the house.
  • Don’t add weight on your own. Adding weight without adjusting the track and spring system can be dangerous.
  • Check with your building department about storm surge. In surge areas, it can matter more for a door to break away than to resist wind.

Your opener and power outages

Storms often knock out power. Learn where the red release cord is and how to use it, and only pull it with the door closed. Some openers include a battery backup that keeps the door working during an outage. See openers and smart openers. Never disable the sensors: federal rules require a secondary entrapment device on residential openers.

After a storm

Before you run the opener, look at the door. Check for dents, bent tracks, gaps at the frame, a crooked hang, and water at the bottom. If anything looks wrong, don’t use the opener. A door forced through bent tracks can jam or fall. See bent track repair and emergency repair.

When to call a technician

Call if the door is bent, off track, stuck, or hanging crooked, or if a spring or cable looks worn. Aura Garage Door Repair Houston takes calls every day from 7am to 11pm at (713) 581-6335. Same-day service depends on the schedule, so call early, especially after a storm.
